Rep Jason Wentworth
Speaker-elect Wentworth appoints two temporary committees
RELEASE|November 17, 2020

House Speaker-elect Jason Wentworth today appointed two new temporary committees that will serve over the next two to three months to set the members of the 101st Legislature up for success. Reps. Mike Mueller and Mary Whiteford will co-chair the Committee on Committees, while Reps. Graham Filler and Steve Johnson will chair the Policy Action Plan Committee.

The Committee on Committees is a temporary panel which will work with both incoming and returning representatives to determine the best fit for committee assignments in the new legislative term beginning in January. The committee will consider representatives’ policy priorities, professional expertise, and personal life experience to find the best possible committee assignments for the House.

“The representatives who will be here in January have incredibly diverse backgrounds and a number of different real-world experiences,” said Wentworth. “The people of Michigan expect results, and we will have strong leaders working in every field. That is why it is so important for the Committee on Committees to find the best fit and make the most of everyone’s skills over the next two years.”

The committee chaired by Reps. Mueller and Whiteford will also include the following members:

Rep. Thomas Albert Rep. Matt Hall Rep. Jim Lilly
Rep. Sue Allor Rep. Roger Hauck Rep. Luke Meerman
Rep. Ann Bollin Rep. Pam Hornberger Rep. Greg VanWoerkom
Rep. Ben Frederick

The Policy Action Plan Committee is also a temporary committee. Members of the committee will soon begin meeting with the incoming House Republican caucus to discuss their top priorities for the new term and collect policy ideas to address Michigan’s biggest challenges. The committee will use that information to build the new House Republican Action Plan.

“We are in a different time with unique challenges and new opportunities to help people, but the fundamentals remain the same,” said Wentworth. “We are going to rely on our local representatives to act as the voice for their community and bring their neighbors’ concerns to the Capitol. Those concerns and those local needs will form our policy plan for the next two years. House Republicans have led the way and driven the policy discussion in Michigan over the past several years, and these members are going to make sure that continues in the new term.”

The committee chaired by Reps. Filler and Johnson will also include the following members:

Rep. Julie Alexander Rep.-elect Andrew Fink Rep. Scott VanSingel
Rep.-elect Bob Bezotte Rep. Phil Green Rep. Jeff Yaroch
Rep.-elect Steve Carra Rep.-elect John Roth

The Committee on Committees and the Policy Action Plan Committee are the first full committee rosters to be named and the third and fourth committees to see chairs appointed by Speaker-elect Wentworth, following the appointment of Rep. Thomas Albert as chair of Appropriations and Rep. Jim Lilly as the chair of Rules and Competitiveness. Complete committee assignments will be announced in January.
