Rep. Wendzel: Trolling with the Troops
RELEASE|June 16, 2021

This weekend, the Southwest Michigan Steelheaders will be hosting their annual Trolling with the Troops event in St. Joseph.

Trolling with the Troops pairs area veterans up with local residents who volunteer their time and boats for a full and fun day of fishing on Lake Michigan. This relaxing setting out on the lake is a perfect place for our local heroes to unwind, share their experiences with fellow veterans, and enjoy our state’s precious natural resources.

Before their day of fishing out on Lake Michigan, on Friday, June 18th, a dinner with great food and raffle prizes will be held at the Stevensville American Legion for all of the veterans participating in the event. Then, the next morning, our veterans and the charter boat captains will shove off bright and early between 5:30 and 5:45 a.m. to begin their day of fighting fish on the big lake.

Last year was my first time attending the event, and by far, the part that our veterans enjoyed the most was their return to the docks. As the boats return to port, community members line the piers and shores of the Margaret B. Upton Arboretum with signs, American flags, banners, balloons, goodwill, and American spirit. I witnessed firsthand how much it meant to our veterans to see members of our community out supporting them.

If you’re around St. Joseph at 1 p.m. on Saturday, this will be an incredible way to show thanks and appreciation to our local heroes. I want to thank the Steelheaders and all of the sponsors ahead of time for their hard work in pulling off this event, I’m looking forward to it, and I hope to see you there!
