State Rep. Mike Hoadley today proudly sponsored a series of bills that would eliminate the current permit requirements needed to carry a concealed pistol in the state of Michigan.
House Bills 5653-57 would make Michigan a “constitutional carry” state, meaning the state would recognize the Second Amendment as the definitive authority on gun law and would no longer require a specialized license to carry a concealed pistol. If passed, the bills would make Michigan the 30th state in the nation to recognize constitutional carry rights.
“We’ve been putting this off long enough,” said Hoadley (R-Au Gres). “The Second Amendment is exceptionally clear. For decades, authorities at both the state and federal level have worked to erode our rights that are explicitly protected in the Constitution. Requiring an American citizen to have a permit in order to carry a concealed pistol is outrageous, and it’s a direct barrier to our basic freedoms.”
Hoadley continued by urging firm support for the effort.
“It’s time for Michigan to put into law what dozens of other states across our country have already realized,” Hoadley said. “These permit requirements are a misguided attempt to protect people. In reality, they only serve as a hindrance to responsible gun owners who are already well-versed in gun safety. Whether you own a firearm or not, we have to recognize that regularly exercising our rights is the only way we can actually defend them.”
