Michigan Merit Package
RELEASE|May 3, 2024

By: State Rep. Pauline Wendzel

Recently, I joined several of my colleagues in introducing a plan that will ensure that state agencies, as well as companies that contract with the state or receive taxpayer funding, hire employees based solely on their qualifications and ability to do the job. The proposal would prevent personnel decisions that are made in the name of so-called diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) but are rooted in harmful discrimination.

In our country, opportunities should be open to all based on their abilities and efforts. It’s imperative that our public institutions and businesses operate on a level playing field by ensuring that hiring and admissions processes are solely based on merit.

Why does this matter? It matters because meritocracy is the bedrock of a just society. It means that individuals are judged not by their background, connections, or any other arbitrary factor, but by their skills, qualifications, and potential. By enacting these bills, we’re sending a clear message that Michigan is committed to providing equal opportunities for all its citizens.

Prioritizing merit-based practices isn’t just about fairness—it’s also about efficiency. When businesses and government agencies hire and admit individuals based on merit, they’re more likely to get the best person for the job or program. This leads to better outcomes, increased productivity, and ultimately, a stronger economy. With the out-of-control cost increases Michigan families are seeing at the gas station, the grocery store, and their monthly utility bills, we need to do everything we can at the state level to strengthen our economy, not pour more gas on the fire.

Most importantly, by prohibiting the use of taxpayer funds for businesses that don’t adhere to merit-based hiring, we’re ensuring that public resources are being used responsibly and ethically. Taxpayers deserve to know that their hard-earned money is being invested in businesses that value talent and hard work above all else.

The Michigan Merit Package isn’t just a set of bills—it’s a statement of our values as a state. By prioritizing meritocracy, we’re not only ensuring fairness and efficiency but also laying the foundation for a brighter and more prosperous future for all Michiganders.
