This week, the Michigan House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed HB 4171 and HB 4172 that expands cancer-related workers’ compensation coverage to more firefighters. Studies have found a link between the chemicals firefighters are exposed to and an increased risk of cancer. As a former firefighter and a prostate cancer survivor, I have experienced this firsthand. My bill, HB 4172, would expand coverage to volunteer, part-time, paid on-call and former firefighters, in addition to full-time firefighters already eligible for coverage. This bill also adds breast, ovarian and non-HPV cervical cancer to the list of cancers covered by the fund. A companion bill sponsored by Rep. Allor, HB 4171, would expand coverage to forest fire officers and fire crash/rescue officers. Firefighters have a 9% greater chance of being diagnosed with cancer and a 14% greater chance of dying from it compared to the general population. I am excited to see these bills pass through the House and move to the Senate
