The Michigan House on Tuesday approved a resolution from state Rep. Matt Hall honoring the bravery and sacrifice of law enforcement officers while commemorating National Police Week.

The resolution comes after 2021 was the deadliest year for on-duty police officers on record, and the number of officers killed in ambush-style attacks more than tripled.

A total of 458 law enforcement officers were killed in the line of duty across the country last year. This includes Sergeant Ryan J. Proxmire of Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office, who tragically passed away on Aug. 15 after being struck by a bullet while involved in a vehicle pursuit the previous evening. He was 39 years old and was survived by his wife Roanna, and his four children.

“While we formally honor our brave law enforcement officers this week, our recognition for their efforts is truly year-round – because their commitment to keeping our families and communities safe is year-round,” said Hall, of Comstock Township, when speaking before the Michigan House on House Resolution 297. “We rely on the courageous individuals in law enforcement when we’re in times of great personal need, and they answer those calls and show up for us.

“This is a demanding and dangerous job. Law enforcement officers deserve our deepest gratitude for the dedication and sacrifices they show every day they put on the uniform.”

There are approximately 17,000 full-time uniformed police officers serving communities across Michigan.
